酒乱・福島正則がしでかした２大失敗とは？

賤ヶ岳の戦い、小牧・長久手の戦い、関ヶ原の戦いなどでも、さまざまな武功を残した福島正則。当然のことながら、誰もが知る、有名な武将である。そんな正則、武士として仕事のできる男ではあったが、酒癖はかなり悪かったらしい。

正則の酒癖の悪さは有名で黒田長政の家臣、母里友信も、福島正則の酒癖の悪さは聞いていた。ある席で、友信は正則に酒をすすめられた。だが、正則の酒癖の悪さを知っていた友信は、その誘いを断る。そんな友信に、正則は、こう言う。

「黒田の武士は酒に弱く、酒を飲んだら役に立たないのか。この酒を飲み干したら、好きなものをやるぞ。」と。

そう言われた友信は、元々、酒も強かったので、すすめられた酒を なんなく飲み干し、約束通り正則に褒美を要求した。その褒美とは、足利義昭、織田信長、豊臣秀吉、福島正則へと伝わる天下三名槍「日本号」である。
「えーーーっ!!!! ま、まさか、僕が大切にしている…あれ？ あれが、欲しいの？？？」と、正則は、さぞかしビックリしただろうが、武士が一度口にしたこと、もう、あとには引けない。正則は、「日本号」を褒美として渡したのだった。

一度、口にした約束は、何が何でも守る！偉いぞ、正則！うーん、これぞ、SAMURAIだ！今の日本の政治家たちにも、この心が欲しいな…と思わされる話である。

そして、もう一つ。酒に関するエピソード。

朝から酒を飲んでいた正則は、家臣と口論になり、その家臣に切腹を命じた。それに従い、家臣は切腹。（かわいそうに…）翌朝、酔いの覚めた正則は、その家臣の名前を呼び、仕事を言いつけようとする。あまりにも普通に、切腹した家臣の名前を呼ぶ正則に周りの家臣はビックリだ！おそるおそる、昨夜の出来事を正則に告げ、切腹した家臣の首を差し出すと……号泣し、家臣の首に謝り続けたらしい。

切腹させられてしまった家臣のことを考えると何とも言えない気持ちになるが「SAMURAIも、ごく普通の人間なのだ」と思わせられるエピソードである。

僕は全く酒を飲まないが、楽しいお酒の席なら喜んで行く。日本には「飲みニュケーション」という言葉があるくらいだから、仕事でもプライベートでも、仲良くなりたい人がいるなら、お酒の席に行くことは、とても大事なことだと理解している。でも正直、正則みたいな人は勘弁してほしい（笑）
「酒は飲んでも、飲まれるな！」は、いつの時代も同じである。

もし僕が、正則と同じ時代に生きたSAMURAIだったら、僕は正則との酒の席に出向くだろうか…。それとも断るのだろうか…。
ふと、そんなことに思いを馳せるのも、歴史の楽しみ方の一つである。

A hero of the Battles of Shizugatake, Komaki Nagakute, Sekigahara and more, Fukushima Masanori was a strong, brave and loyal samurai. He was also partial to alcohol, which became a problem in his personal life.

Once when meeting with a retainer of Kuroda Nagamasa, a samurai called Mori Tomonobu, Masanori suggested a round of drinking. Knowing Fukushima’s strong drinking habits, Mori at first refused, butMasanori goaded him on saying that "Kuroda samurai must be weak if they can’t drink! Go on, drink
with me and I’ll give you anything you want!".  Agreeing to the deal, Mori Tomonobu drank with Fukushima Masanari, and finally requested that which he desired as a reward for the drinking session.
"I want the spear known as Nihon-Go!" he stated.
"Huh?, but, …but that’s important to me,…" stammered a shocked Masanori.
Indeed, the spear had been passed down from Ashikaga Yoshiaki to Oda Nobunaga, who in turn presented it to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had given it to Masanori.
"You promised!," reminded Mori steadfastly.
No doubt regretting the offer, Masanori gave the samurai the prized weapon, because a samurai’s promise was not to be broken! (If only our politicians had that samurai spirit!)

There is another episode regarding Fukushima Masanori and his drinking problems leading to great loss.
Masanori would often start drinking early in the morning, and alcohol would often be the cause of drunken arguments between the master and his retainers. During one such alcohol fueled quarrel, a particular close retainer was ordered to commit hara-kiri.  The unfortunate samurai retired to a quiet area and as ordered, cut himself open.
The next morning when Masanori called for the loyal servant, the other samurai were astonished that their lord had not remembered what had happened the night before, and presented the retainers head as proof.
When Masanori realised what he had done, he broke down and cried out loud in sorrow.

Despite the image of the samurai being a stoic, upstanding, faultless and noble warrior, they were after all human, with human faults and frailty too.
